Education Building

Future learning hub

Education Building Concept

A concept for a future learning hub at Maitai Bay.

We are sharing an early concept for a future Education Building at Maitai Bay – a place intended to support kaitiakitanga, learning, restoration, and community connection.

This project is still at concept stage. By sharing these images and drawings, we hope to invite feedback from whānau, the local community, and supporters of the wider Maitai Bay vision. Community feedback will help shape the next stage of the design and strengthen future funding discussions needed to make the project possible.

Site and setting

The proposed Education Building is designed to sit lightly within the existing campground landscape. It is connected to the wider setting of Maitai Bay, the existing carpark, beach access, the central outdoor learning area, and the relationship between the existing pou, the proposed pou, and the viewpoint.

The intention is not to dominate the site, but to create a modest, welcoming place for learning and gathering that belongs to the landscape and reflects the cultural and environmental significance of Maitai Bay.

The concept

The concept proposes a small education hub arranged around a shared central open space. The building is intended to support environmental education, cultural learning, storytelling, community gathering, and practical restoration activities connected to the ongoing care of the bay.

The current concept includes a classroom, museum, office, kitchen, covered decks, seating terraces, and a central outdoor learning space. Together, these spaces are intended to support both everyday learning and future community events.

Learning Classroom space for education, workshops, and environmental programmes.
Storytelling Museum and display space to share knowledge, history, and kaupapa.
Gathering Covered decks, seating, and open areas for community use.
Restoration A practical base for monitoring, care, and long-term action.

A place for learning, gathering, and kaitiakitanga

This concept imagines the Education Building as a place where people of different ages can come together to learn about the moana, the whenua, and the long-term restoration of Maitai Bay.

It is envisioned as a place for sharing knowledge, building connection, supporting future generations, and strengthening the wider kaupapa of restoration and care. The building is not only about shelter or function – it is also about creating a place where stories, values, learning, and action can come together.

Why this matters

The wider Maitai Bay vision is about much more than a single building. It is about restoring mauri, supporting kaitiakitanga, and creating long-term spaces for education, leadership, and community participation.

The Education Building is intended to become an important physical anchor within that wider vision – a place that can support learning, environmental monitoring, cultural exchange, and future community programmes over time.

Next steps

This project has not yet been funded for construction. The current material is part of an early concept phase intended to guide discussion, build support, and help shape the next stage of the project.

Community feedback will help inform future design development and strengthen conversations around partnerships and funding.
